About this event
The League of Women Voters commemorates Juneteenth each year. On this day Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, TX, to announce the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans.
In Colorado, Juneteenth has been an observed holiday and in 2021 it became a national holiday.
Read about the decades-long efforts of 97-year-old Opal Lee, the "grandmother of Juneteenth", advocating for Juneteenth as a national holiday. When she was twelve, 500 white rioters vandalized and burned down her family's home in Fort Worth, TX. Read more in her Wikipedia
page.
