The League of Women Voters celebrates the anniversary of the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which lowered the voting age to 18 in 1971.

Read more about the 26th Amendment in Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-sixth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

The League of Women Voters works to ensure that 18 year olds are registered to vote and informed about election issues.

In addition, the State of Colorado encourages 16 year olds to register to vote in advance so that, when they turn 18, they are already set up and receive their ballots when eligible to vote.

Black Women’s Equal Pay Day is the day that Black women in the U.S. must work until before they earn the equivalent of what men were paid the previous year.

Because women earn less, on average, than men, they must work longer for the same amount of pay. The wage gap is even greater for most women of color. Starting in 2022, data now includes part-time, seasonal, and gig workers, many of whom are essential workers piecing together multiple part-time jobs to get by.

The League of Women Voters honors the memory of Ida B. Wells-Barnett, American investigative journalist, suffragist, educator, and an early leader in the civil rights movement on her birthday Saturday, July 16.

Born in 1862, she wrote, spoke, and organized for civil rights and the women‘s suffrage movement. She was one of the founders of the NAACP. She worked to combat prejudice and violence. The 2004 film "Iron Jawed Angels" dramatizes the moment during the Woman Suffrage Parade of 1913 when Wells ignored instructions to march with the segregated parade units and crossed the lines to march with the other members of her Illinois chapter.

In addition to Civitas‘ request for hydraulic fracturing of 165 wells near southeast Aurora neighborhoods and the Aurora Reservoir, currently with the Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission (ECMC), formerly the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, GMT Exploration has applied for a new 20-well hydraulic fracturing pad named “Secret Stash” near Civitas’s proposed Beaver well pad.

This would bring the grand total to more than 180 hydraulic fracturing wells in the area around the Aurora Reservoir.

Additionally, Tenderfoot Pipeline Company has requested a new five-mile pipeline that would carry oil and gas from the proposed Secret Stash wells east.

Community residents plan to make public comments against the pipeline in person at the Arapahoe Board of County Commissioners hearing and remind the Arapahoe County Commissioners that we want full public hearings for all oil and gas well pad applications within this area.

We are currently using our local League position on the issue of homelessness to lobby for affordable housing in numerous municipalities in Arapahoe County and in Douglas County. We submitted numerous comments on the SouthGlenn development to the City of Centennial concerning the proposed redevelopment at SouthGlenn; we also urged our members who live in Centennial to comment. We have testified in Littleton concerning the proposed redevelopment in Aspen Grove. We also submitted comments to Aurora on the need for approval of Habitat for Humanity’s affordable housing units.
