Anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act
About this event
The League of Women Voters celebrates the anniversary of the signing of the Great American Outdoors Act on August 4, 2020. This new national law invested in keeping our national parks clean and accessible and made entry to national parks free on August 4 of each year.
The Great American Outdoors Act created the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund to address the maintenance backlogs in the National Parks.
As of April of 2024, the funding has addressed $774.9M of deferred maintenance.
As of August of 2024, the Department of the Interior’s National Park Service released a new report finding that visitor spending in communities near national parks in 2023 resulted in a record high $55.6 billion benefit to the nation’s economy and supported 415,400 jobs.
The law designates August 4th as "Great American Outdoors Day." On this day each year, entrance fees are waived at National Park Service sites that typically charge fees.
