About this event
The League of Women Voters commemorates District of Columbia Emancipation Day on the April 16, 1862 anniversary. It commemorates the 1862 signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed over 3,000 enslaved people in Washington, DC.
The League supports the District of Columbia's struggle for statehood as a human rights and racial justice issue.
