LWVUS Voting Rights March to Selma, Alabama Teach-In and Panel Discussion

About this event

Anniversary march over Edmund Pettus Bridge with John Lewis

The League of Women Voters has talked about the flood of harmful actions from the executive branch — numerous executive orders, rolling back critical protections like DEI initiatives, attacking the rights of immigrants and LGBTQIA+ individuals, and more. What we’re witnessing is not only an overreach of power from the executive branch but a failure on the part of Congress to sufficiently respond.

Last week, LWVUS and Leagues from across the country sent a letter to congressional leaders demanding that they take action to protect the rule of law, defend the Constitution, and end this illegal overreach. Read the letter and our statement

As we look ahead to March, LWVUS staff and League leaders will come together in Selma, AL, to commemorate the brave civil rights leaders who marched for democracy on Bloody Sunday in 1965. Ahead of the 60th Selma anniversary, LWVUS will host a teach-in and panel discussion tomorrow, February 21 at 3pm ET. Facilitated by our CEO, Celina Stewart, we'll hear from a coalition of Selma civil rights advocates and enjoy musical performances from local artists. As we honor courageous civil rights activists, we also learn from the past as we move forward in our work to protect voting rights and defend democracy.
