Climate Emergency Presentation - Youth v. Gov. - All are invited

Climate emergency rally with signs saying 'Wake up!'

The League of Women Voters of Arapahoe and Douglas Counties invites all League members and their guests to our November presentation online: Juliana v. U.S., the constitutional climate change lawsuit filed by twenty one youth, and their organizational plaintiff Earth Guardians, against the U.S. Government. The lawsuit argues that the U.S. Government has violated the youngest generation’s constitutional rights to life, liberty, and property, and has failed to protect essential public trust resources through its inaction on the threat of climate change. We'll welcome guest plaintiffs Nicole and Marie Venner for comments and Q & A.

This is a free online event with no registration required.

And here's what League has been doing:

* LWVADC member Amy Sherwood, on behalf of LWVCO, proposed the LWVUS to adopt this Climate Emergency Resolution at the LWVUS National Convention in 2020. It was approved and adopted:
"The LWV calls for an immediate, wide-scale, mobilization by the United States that restores, protects and funds an ecologically sustainable environment and climate, based on an interrelated approach that is environmentally sound, science-based, just and equitable, dedicated to appropriately addressing the speed and scale of the global climate change emergency."
* In 2022 LWVUS passed climate emergency declarations at the National Convention.
* In August, 2022 LWVUS signed on in support of S.3531, the National Climate Adaptation and Resilience Strategy Act, to create a national strategy to prepare for climate hazards and establish a White House Chief Resilience Officer, interagency working groups, and a non-federal partners council. It would also incentivize funding for resilience planning.
* In September, 2022 LWVUS became an official observer at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in Switzerland.
* In November, 2022 LWVUS member Robin Tokmakian has been attending the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference(COP27) in Egypt as an official observer.
